Founded in 2007, Sixteen 600 winery is named after the address of Sonoma-based grape grower and organic pioneer Phil Coturri, who was among the first to experiment with organic and biodynamic farming in northern California more than 30 years ago. The wines are made by Jeff Baker, Erich Bradley, and Alejandro Zimman. And Phil’s sons Sam and Max manage their tasting room and shop in Sonoma proper. Thanks to his pioneering work in sustainable and environmentally friendly farming in Sonoma and Napa, Phil manages some of the best vineyards across the two AVAs.
Phil sources the fruit for their wines from roughly 20 acres that he manages for his clients, which combined cover more than 700 acres throughout both the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. All of the sites are certified organic and they are all farmed biodynamically (a few of the sites are biodynamic certified as well).
The beautiful Rossi Ranch 2014, a blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Marsanne, is markedly Rhône in character, with notes of lemon curd and lemon zest and a slight touch of nuttiness. The nimble Dos Limones Syrah 2015, vinified on Viognier skins, is very varietally expressive with notes of bacon fat and dark fruit, well balanced with lingering spice in the finish. The flavor profile of the Estate Zinfandel 2014 (Great wine) is profound, ranging from black cherry to ripe red fruit, sage, and underbrush with a beautiful note of spice in the finish. This lean, lithe wine represents a connection to the grape variety’s history in California. But it also represents its future, as more and more winemakers are producing wines in this style today.
