Pax and Pamela Mahle established Wind Gap as a way to focus their coastal Syrah vineyard sources in a more geographically and stylistically cohesive label. Having always made naturally low alcohol high acid wines thanks to the proximity to the Pacific Ocean, they soon began to seek out other vineyards in the Petaluma Wind Gap that would produce wines of a similar style and spirit.
All the vineyard sources are located west of Sebastapol in the Petaluma Wind Gap, from which the winery derives its name. The Nellessen and the Majik vineyards are located in the Sebastapol Hills and sit across the valley from each other on west Sonoma’s iconic and prevalent fine sandy loam known as Goldridge soil. The Armagh is the most southern vineyard and closest to the ocean. A steep hillside of dense schist high in iron consistently makes the grapes the first to harvest and the wine the most full-bodied of the three Syrahs.
Gap’s Crown Pinot Noir 2014 (GREAT WINE) has a wonderful spicy and savory character even though its red fruit and berry flavors are already brilliant and in nearly crystal clear focus. The Nellessen Syrah 2014 already abounds with purple flowers, black tea, and white pepper. The Armagh Syrah 2014 is deep, dark, and plush sleek black fruit is embellished with purple flowers, black pepper, and a wild streak. A chewy texture and a wide tannic structure even out the heft of the wine.
