The Volker Eisele Family Estate is one of the rare family-run small-scale estates in Napa where organic farming practices have always been practiced. Now managed by its second generation, it produces some of the most stunning Cabernet Sauvignon in California today.
The Volker Eisele Family Estate was founded in Napa Valley in1974 by Volker, then a graduate student and instructor in the sociology department at the University of California Berkeley. He would become one of the pioneers of organic farming in Napa and one of the state’s leading advocates for sustainable farming practices. His son Alexander Eisele is the second generation of the Eisele family to run the farm. Molly Lyman is the family’s long-time winemaker.
The estate’s 60 acres planted to vine are located in Napa’s Chiles Valley District at altitudes ranging from 900-1,100 feet a.s.l. The soils are predominantly loam and shale. The entire farm is certified organic.
The Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (SLOW WINE) was arguably the most impressive of current releases tasted, in part because of its moderate price for such a gorgeous wine, in part because of electric freshness and vibrant fruit and earth character. This wine is an example of the type of wine that Napa can deliver when the grapes are farmed with (generational) respect for the land and environment and when the winemaking approach aims to achieve that buoyant transparency of fruit.
