The Thomas Fogarty winery was founded in 1976 by heart surgeon Thomas Fogarty, who intended from the outset that his 350-acre estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains would be part of the California Land Conservation Act. Today, the pristine farm is surrounded by undeveloped woods atop Skyline Ridge Preserve, with neighbors that include some of California most historically significant wineries are located. The winery was established in 1981. The longtime vineyard manager is Julio Deras and Nathan Kandler serves as winemaker.

Thomas Fogarty has employed organic farming practices for more than 35 years, since its origins, and it incorporates many elements of biodynamic farming regimens, including cover crops and composting. Due to the farm’s proximity to the San Andreas Fault line, the subsoils are rich in ancient seabed, ideal for the cultivation of mineral-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The Langley Hill Vineyard Estate Chardonnay 2013 is marked by its mouth-watering acidity and nuanced layers of white and tropical fruit, all set against a firm backbone of Kandler’s signature mineral character. The Nelson Family Vineyard 2013 is another stand-out and like its white siblings, it is defined by the estate’s trademarks of bright acidity and a minerality that makes the estate’s Pinot Noir a California benchmark. The more moderately priced Gewürztraminer 2014, with its lovely freshness and clean floral notes, is also worth searching out.
