Chris and Hilary Berg are proud University of Kansas alumni who make some mighty fine wine. Chris’ family moved from the Midwest to start a business in Tualatin, Oregon and while they were at it, they purchased a 20-acre hilltop property in the Yamhill Carlton American Viticulrural Area. In 1999 they planted four different clones of Pinot Noir and a tiny bit of Pinot Gris. In 2001 Chris and Hilary (the editor of a lo- cal wine magazine) moved onto the land to make wine and raise a family. The first vintage for Roots Wine Co. — all 72 cases of it — was in 2002.
The Berg’s estate vineyard commands a beautiful view of the valley below from its perch 625 feet above sea level. The vineyard hugs a hillside comprised of sedimentary Willakenzie soils and a broad vein of iron oxide. The vineyard has been organically farmed from the beginning and Chris Berg points out even his leased fruit comes from organically farmed properties, including Cancilla Vineyard near Gaston, Oregon, which is Oregon Tilth certified organic.
The Roots signature is a well- made wine you are eager to immediately share with friends. Their Estate Pinot Gris is one of the best in the valley with its aromas of pear and lemon, combined with a crisp citrus flavor that will have you craving a lemon granita. The Saffron Fields Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016, made with fruit from a Yamhill-Carlton neighbor, is floral and creamy, with lots of honeysuckle, cassis and dark chocolate. The Cluster Pinot Noir 2016 is a co-fermented blend of grapes from three vineyards. It is an earthy powerhouse of blackberries, pipe tobacco, leather and, clove.
