RAEN (Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally) is a new project from the youngest generation of the Mondavi family. The inspiration for RAEN stems from the Pinot Noir that Carlo and Dante’s father and grandfather used to make in the 1960s and 70s.
The project began quietly in 2013 after identifying three exceptional vineyards on the still rugged and unpopulated Sonoma coastline. The stunning Fort Ross-Seaview vineyard lies in the northwesternmost part of the expansive Sonoma Coast AVA, just a stone’s throw from the Pacific. Sitting at 1,500 a.s.l. and just above the fog line, sunlight is mitigated by the extreme cooling effects of the fog, thus lengthening the growing season. Viticulture here is rigorously organic.
The Sonoma Coast Royal St. Robert Cuvée 2015 impressed our tasting panel with its plush ripe berries and an undercurrent of earth and balsamic. The Fort Ross-Seaview Home Field 2015 was another standout thanks to its mineral and earthy character and its elegant balance of acidity and tannin.
