Pence Ranch is overseen by Blair Pence, winegrower and proprietor, who set out to bring together the best team to oversee vineyard management and winemaking. Sashi Moorman is the tireless whirlwind behind the wines while the vineyards are managed by Francisco Ramirez.

38 acres of the 200-acre Pence Ranch estate in the Santa Rita Hills are planted to grapes, mostly Burgundian varieties with a few blocks of Rhône varieties sprinkled in. The focus here is on Pinot Noir (over 20 acres planted) and Chardonnay (about 10 acres) cultivation with a smaller production of Gamay (three acres), Grenache (about one acre), and Syrah (three acres). They began planting them in 2005. Ramirez stresses a regimen in line with organic procedures but the vineyards themselves are not certified organic. On the ranch, a more holistic approach to agriculture is taken, with the integration of animals, olives, nuts, vegetables, and grains. The site benefits from cooling Pacific winds and has a diverse topography with various sun exposure intensities and soil types various mixtures of river rock, clay, and limestone.

The Pence Chardonnay 2014 is rich and mouth-filling with heavy citrus notes and a distinctly reserved presence of oak. The Sebastiano Syrah 2015 (GREAT WINE) is a heady mix of pepper and lilacs with a blackberry core that is nicely backed up by a nice acidity making this a prime candidate for your next dinner party.
