With one winery and an organic foods business under his belt, owner Douglas Stewart launched Lichen after reacquiring the site of his previous winery (the acclaimed Breggo), this time abandoning the négociant model and growing his own grapes.
Stuart planted the vineyard estate in 2008 to meter-by-meter spacing, emulating the chosen vine density in Champagne, and is, to his knowledge, the only winemaker in the Western Hemisphere to have done so. The subsoil is dominated by sandy loam with a presence of clay where the hillside slides into the valley floor.
Our tasting panel gave high marks to the Moonglow Pinot Noir 2015 with one of our editors calling it “an excellent introduction into the world of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir fusing the fruit and potency of California with the elegance afforded by a slightly cooler growing region.” The Estate Pinot Noir 2014 (SLOW WINE), with its richly savory character, showed even more depth and seemed even more confident than its sibling Moonglow.
