Owners Mark and Ciera Adams are musicians turned winegrowers, perhaps explaining why they make such soulful wines. When his family moved back to Paso Robles to farm the family property, he was inspired to plant vineyard instead of orchards thanks to his memories of a childhood friend whose parents were winemakers.
The Adams Ranch Estate is the home vineyard of Mark and Ciera and was purchased in the 1070s by Mark’s parents. Located on the west side of the Paso Robles in the Willow Creek sub-AVA, the property was first planted to head-trained vines in 2005 with the classic Rhône trinity: Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. 75 percent of the vineyards are ungrafted, a rare luxury allowed by the sandy loam nature of the vineyard. Farming practices are minimalist. “Let the plants be plants,” Mark likes to say.
The elegance of the Adams Ranch 2015, a Syrah-Grenache blend, is what immediately stands about the wine. The sleek concentration of boysenberry and juicy plum) is balanced by vibrant acidity and silky tannins. The James Berry Vineyard 2015 (GRAND WINE), a blend of Syrah and Mourvèdre, delivers captivating floral notes on the nose followed by rich dark red flavors and elegant tannins that are already well evolved.
