PEOPLE
Sonoma County native Kenny Likitprakong launched Hobo Wine Co. in 2002 with the goal of converting his wine- wary skater friends to a laid-back and unassuming wine drinking culture, one that contrasted starkly with the stilted status-quo of the late 90s. With a degree in enology from UC Davis and some experience at a Santa Cruz Mountain winery under his belt, yet with no vineyards and no winery to call his own, Kenny’s vagabondish winemaking style took shape in the form of unfussy and affordable small lot bottlings with a focus on red varieties sourced from growers in Sonoma County.
VINEYARDS
Kenny draws from a variety of vineyards throughout Mendocino, Sonoma, Solano, and Santa Cruz counties, often highlighting iconic California varieties like Validguie, Charbono, Carignan, and Zinfandel. Over 80% of the vineyards with which he works are farmed sustainably, organically, or biodynamically, and that number is growing every year. Kenny and his wife Lynn have pledged 1% of all annual profits to 1% For The Planet, an organization dedicated to raising money for environmental activists.
WINES
An eye-opening mélange of key lime pie, white flowers, and resinous pine, the Lolonis Chardonnay 2017 from Mendocino’s Redwood Valley has a voluptuousness on the palate that is whipped away by a sparkling minerality and racy acidity. The spirited Lolonis Valdiguié 2017 is juicy and immensely pleasurable (and at 11% alcohol immensely drinkable), offering all sorts of ripe dark berries and purple flowers. Intensely aromatic, the Suisun Valley Charbono 2017 (Everyday wine) boasts a pristine character of fruit and flower-blueberry compote and a lavish display of violets and hibiscus florals.
