Since 1961, Heitz Cellars has been a family-owned-and-run winery whose aim it is to create wines with elegance, balance and age worthiness. In 2018, this continues to be the case, but there is a new family at the helm: The Lawrence Family, who share the same commitment to sustainable agriculture and core winemaking values. They will continue to work with the same winery team and the vineyard management company, which has been the same since the 1970s.
All of the Heitz vineyards, which are found in almost every AVA in Napa, are estate-owned, with the exception of an exclusive contract they have with the owners of Martha’s Vineyard in Oakville. Heitz Cellars believes that sustainable agriculture leads to the best fruit, and beginning in December of 2018, they will have organic certification.
Heitz Cellars believes in picking grapes slightly earlier than most in Napa Valley because that gives the wines a higher acidity and lower level of alcohol. The Napa Valley Chardonnay 2016 is a perfect example: the expected tart apple notes are there, but are accompanied by apricot, lemon tart and light oak; there is a creamy mouthfeel due to some light bâtonnage, but the acidity comes through and balances the wine perfectly. An oddity in Napa is the Napa Valley Grignolino 2015, a grape variety from Piedmont, Italy, that was already planted on the property when the Heitz Family bought it: while bright red fruit is the main component, blood orange, floral and sage rounds out its flavour profile. Since 1966, Heitz Cellars has been making a Cabernet Sauvignon from Martha’s Vineyard fruit. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Martha’s Vineyard 2013 (Great wine) bursts forth with big ripe cherries, cassis, bay leaf and mint, and lingers; wonderful structure with already well-integrated tannins.
