PEOPLE

Against many odds, Miljenko “Mike “ Grgich made his way from Croatia to make wine in California. He gained international fame over night when a Chardonnay he had crafted for Chateau Montelena Winery in Calistoga won first place in the 1976 Tasting of Paris. A year later, Mike joined forces with Austin Hills of the Hills Bros. Coffee family, and founded Grgich Hills. They have been making eco-conscious, age-worthy wines ever since. Grgich Hills is very much a family-run-and-operated winery: Mike’s daughter Violet, who grew up following him around the vineyards and cellar, manages the daily operations, sales and marketing of the estate. Ivo Jeramaz, Mike’s nephew is the winemaker.

 

VINEYARDS

Grgich Hills has vineyards across five AVAs in Napa. The reddish, gravelly, loam of Calistoga and high temperatures make it an ideal location for Zinfandel. The Rutherford and Yountville vineyards, with their clay loam, are home to the winery’s classic Bordeaux varietals. The cooler-temperature Carneros and American Canyon are where Chardonnay and a couple of other cool-climate whites and reds are grown.

 

 

WINES

The Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley Chardonnay 2015 delivers exotic fruit notes with a point of minerality; it is vinified in French oak, but does not undergo malolactic fermentation in order to maintain its zippy acidity. The Miljenko’s Old Vine Zinfandel 2013 from Calistoga fruit, some of which is over 120 years old! Complex aromas of plum and a lavender; a good structure balances out its juiciness. The Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (Great wine) offers a 50/50 ratio between dark fruit and more earthy notes that linger on the palate. The bright acidity and firm tannins show that this wine is capable of some serious age.
