John Lockwood’s Enfield Wine Co. is a new icon in California Cabernet but his releases span broadly across grapes and price points. He works out of a custom crush facility in Santa Rosa that he shares with twenty some other winemakers but his wine stays distinctive among all that microbial activity. In the last couple of years, Enfield has been quickly gaining acclaim for the quality of the wines.
One of Lockwood’s rules about what vineyards he’ll work with is that they must be farmed by people rather than management companies. For him, business is built on personal relationships and good farming practices. In the last few years, Lockwood has begun to farm some of the parcels he works with like Heron Lake so that he can have greater control at a lower cost, some of the parcels he’s working with are no-till, no-spray, and dry-farmed, even if uncertified.
Enfield makes wines that are stellar across the board but the Citrine Chardonnay 2017 stands out as an exception value for its complexity, beauty and balance. The Heron Lake Pinot Noir 2016 is a light, cherry, graphitey beauty. Lockwood started farming the one-acre Hennessey Ridge vineyard last year and what a great choice that was. The Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 (Great wine) from that vineyard is gorgeous, complex and only 12.2% alcohol. The wine is a universe in itself full of bright watermelon, deep cocoa, black tea, sage, and freshness.
