PEOPLE

Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr partnered in 2009 when they began Sandhi. They share a similar philosophy, believing that the purpose of winemaking is to craft balanced wines with no additives or interventions. Parr is a James Beard award-winning author and the wine director for the Michael Mina Restaurant Group. Moorman started his career as a chef before transitioning to winemaking in the 1990’s. In 2013, the duo began their second label, Domaine de la Côte. Both wineries rally against the style of overripe, high alcohol, oaked wines.

VINEYARDS

Domaine de la Côte is the high-end counterpoint to the more approachable Sandhi. Parr and Moorman source fruit from contracted vineyards over which they maintain complete control. Siren’s Call, Bloom’s Field, Memorious, and La Côte hang on a cliff’s edge just miles from the Pacific Ocean.

WINES

The Memorious Pinot Noir 2016 is complex; it is full of violets, rose petals, dusty red cherry, and a sweet herbaceous, oregano finish. The La Côte Pinot Noir 2016 (Great wine) is delicate and floral with blackberry, black pepper and a long, lingering finish. The Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay 2015 barrel fermented in 1⁄3 new puncheons, is round and savory. A flinty nose combines with orange blossoms, lemon, and dragonfruit that leads to a refreshing finish. The Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay 2015 usually sells out quickly as it is an impressive, single-vineyard bottling made from vines planted in 1971.
