Crowley Wines is genuinely a team effort. Tyson Crowley makes the wines and works closely with his vineyard partners. Emily Crowley, Tyson’s wife, handles marketing and special events. Evan Roberts is an active partner the Crowleys look to for sales and business advice. Tyson began his wine career in 1995 when he took a cellar position at Erath. After ensuing stints with J.K. Carriere and Brick House, he assisted John Paul at Cameron Winery for five years. The first Crowley wine was actually made at Cameron in 2005. In 2007 Tyson moved to the August Cellars Coop in Newberg.
Fruit is purchased from cooler, higher altitude sites that are either certified Low Input Viticulture & Enology (LIVE) or organic. Four Winds Vineyard is located high up in the McMinnville Coast Range, where Crowley sources Wente clone Chardonnay and Pommard. The other three vineyards are located in the Dundee Hills AVA: Oracle, La Colina and Tukwila. These vineyards provide Pinot Noir grapes from mature vines growing in the Dundee Hills’ signature red Jory soil. Crowley frequently visits the vineyards and says “at harvest, freshness, lower alcohols, flavor and acidity guide our picking decisions.”
Tyson Crowley ages his wines for 16-20 months in mostly neutral French oak barrels and makes some of the most compelling wines in Oregon. The Four Winds Chardonnay 2016 dazzles with its chalky minerality and one-two fruit punch of Meyer lemon and white peaches. The Entre Nous Pinot Noir has perfect balance and a wonderful combination of dark raspberries, hay, espresso lilacs and orange peel. Crowley’s La Colina Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016 (Great wine) is an autumnal combination of dried morels, loam, pine needles, dark raspberry fruit, saline and an oh-so-silky mouthfeel.
