‘‘«We have a dynamic relationship,» Tom Gerrie shares. «Our skill sets meld to marry the style of wine with this place, and we are making the best wines in Cristom’s history»”
Wine Grower/Owner, Tom Gerrie grew up working summers at Cristom Vineyards. Hands-on training around the world and formal study in Oregon brought him back as an adult to lead the family business. Gerrie explains, “We are now working on the 100-year vision for Cristom.” By his side is longtime Cristom winemaker, Steve Doerner, recruited by Gerrie’s father over 25 years ago.
Estate vineyards benefit from the cooling Pacific Ocean winds that flow nightly at 25-35 mph through the Van Duzer Corridor. Ripeness and acidity are achieved with warm sunny days dropping by as much as 35 degrees Fahrenheit at night. The four estate Pinot Noir vineyards – Eileen, Jessie, Louise, and Marjorie – are named for Gerrie family matriarchs. In addition to nearly 46 acres of Pinot Noir, Cristom produces estate Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Syrah. While not currently pursuing certification, Cristom’s vineyards are farmed with biodynamic practices.
The Louise Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015 expresses ripe plum skin tannin with aromas of spice and baked clay brick. The Eileen Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015 is a signature of its high elevation site with wind-firmed tannin and fragrant spices.
Mt. Jefferson Pinot Noir 2015
Is bright and crisp with tart cranberry. Cristom’s “hallmark” Pinot Noir style is whole-cluster fermentation by native yeasts. Gerrie explains, «Whole-cluster incorporates a complete 4th level of tannic structure.» Doerner adds, «The wines have ‘nervosity’ – a tension or backbone of tannin and acidic bite.»
