The Coturri estate was founded by Harry “Red” Coturri and his sons Tony and Phil in 1975 and the winery was bonded in 1979. Originally from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, winemaking was handed down in the Coturri family from Enrico Coturri who immigrated to America in 1901. Tony Coturri has been making wine since 1964 and oversees the winery which celebrates 39 harvests this year.
Coturri Winery is situated on Sonoma Mountain in an area that gained notoriety in the work of author Jack London’s book Valley of the Moon and is sited at 750 feet above at the town of Glen Ellen in the Sonoma Valley AVA. With seven-acres under vine, the vineyard is a second-generation planting of Martini Monte Rosso Zinfandel clones on St. George rootstock. The vines are dry-farmed and head pruned in the traditional Italian goblet style.
Coturri pursues natural winemaking with no sulfur additions, no filtering or fining and uses neutral oak cooperage. The Petit Syrah 2016 from an estate in east Hopland with dry farmed vines in excess of 100 years old. Medium-bodied and opaque with moderate acidity tasting of liquid blackberries, ferrous minerality, and mesquite. Red Non-Vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Zinfandel and Merlot from North Coast sites showing umami and balsamic notes with tangy, earthy red fruit and savory finish. Zinfandel 2017 (Slow Wine) is a blend of two-thirds Mendocino fruit and one third estate Zinfandel this wine shows cranberry, dark plum and saddle leather with a lively mid palate.
