Father and son team, David and Ross Cobb founded the winery in 2001 and it began as a Pinot Noir passion project, focusing on the rewarding challenge of working with that grape. Long before this, David began planting Pinot Noir in 1989 in the Sonoma Coast after years of searching for the right region and site for his perfect Pinot. Cobb comes out of a combination of heart and scientific acuity, which shows through in the precision and beauty of the wines.
Cobb Wines is a rare winery in California that only makes wine from grapes they grow on land they have control over. Increasingly, this model is out of reach to younger winemakers but the stability that wineries like Cobb are able to have gives these wines gravitas that isn’t possible any other way. The vineyards are sprinkled around the Sonoma Coast and as far inland as Sebastopol. Both sugar and acidity are able to develop in balance with the not-too-strong shifts in temperature from day to night.
Cobb’s Emmaline Ann Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015 (Great wine) comes from the vineyard that surrounds the tasting room, and shows ripe strawberry, licorice, and lively tannin. The Mariani Vineyard Chardonnay 2016 is dreamy and deep, threaded with peach, orange blossom, and almond. The lightest, brightest, and most poetic of the Pinot Noirs is the Diane Cobb Coastlands Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015, with its flowery nose and red fruit aromatics is a siren song of a wine.
