In 2010 Gary Breen and Anna Beuselinck purchased an abandoned 50-acre property that once served as an educational culinary center for Fetzer. They chose the property for its bucolic setting, the six-acre garden, and the 2,000 species of plants. But they ended up with an unexpected bonus: A Viognier vineyard as part of the deal. When life hands you grapes, you make wine, and so Gary and Anna made their first 120 cases. Six years later they now make 26 different wines.

Many of Campovida’s growers were selling to wineries down in Napa and Sonoma, their grapes ending up in high-volume blends. Every single grower is located within 30 minutes of the winery and every single bottle bears the name of the vineyard and the winegrower, showcasing them, Mendocino, and the purity of fruit. Green and Beuselinck work with many old vineyards and old school growers, convincing those who are not organic to convert with the guarantee of a fixed contract and higher rates.

The Estate Viognier 2015 has a classic Viognier nose with delicate aromas of white peach, pear, yellow apple, honeysuckle, and white tea. Despite the elevated alcohol (14.8%) of the Dark Horse Ranch Grenache 2014, the wine is surprisingly agile on the palate, with high-toned red fruit and floral notes contrasted by an underlying current of burnt underbrush.
