BEDROCK WINE CO. (SNAIL)
21481 8th St. East
Sonoma CA 95476
Bedrock Wine Co. is the apotheosis of the current California wine revolution. Its work with Zinfandel and other heritage grapes from California has shown the world that these grapes can produce compelling, world-class wines with immense appeal for the contemporary palate.
Morgan Twain-Peterson grew up among the vines and barrels at the iconic Ravenswood winery, founded by his father Joel Peterson. After graduate school and internships in Australia and Bordeaux, he made the prodigal return to the homeland to start Bedrock in 2007. Chris Cottrell entered the picture a few years later and the two have grown Bedrock considerably, both in size and breadth.
With a focus on old vineyards, heritage grapes, and field blends, Peterson and Cottrell source from 55 vineyards throughout the state and make 26 wines. 2016 marked the 129th year of production for the Bedrock vineyard. Planted in 1888, this tangible piece of viticultural history boasts a wide spectrum of varieties ranging from Zinfandel and Carignan to Mollard and Alicante Bouschet. The Evangelho vineyard in Contra Costa County, with ungrafted vines planted in 1890, is another standout.
The Old Vine Zinfandel California 2016 impressed our panel with its vibrant acidity and floral notes. The Contra Costa Evangelho Heritage 2015 (SLOW WINE) was another favorite for its approachability and rich fruit flavors.
