Native Napans and childhood friends Nathan Lee Roberts and Duncan Arnot Meyers grew up wine industry-adjacent and wine piqued their interested at an early age Nathan’s father practiced the all but lost art of cooperage. Founded in 2001, Arnot-Roberts was a vanguard of what has now become common in non-brick and mortar wineries: a range of sites throughout California, intimate working relationships with their farmers, single vineyard wines, and a low-intervention winemaking practices.
Though Duncan and Nathan started out sourcing directly from farmers, as of 2013 they can count themselves in that category. The Que Syrah Vineyard, planted in 1993 near the town of Occidental, is located a mere 2 miles from the Pacific Ocean, whose domineering presence is felt in the thick layers of fog, extraordinary swings in day-night temperatures, and capricious weather.
The light and tantalizingly refreshing Rosé of Touriga National 2017 smacks of pomegranates, yellow peaches, and tarragon. A blend of four Sonoma vineyards, the Sonoma Coast 2017 (Great wine) is a pinnacle of cool-climate Syrah. Dark, juicy, and hyper-defined fruits built the core, but perfumed notes of violets, white pepper, fresh leather, and eucalytpus adorn the wine and lift it to new aromatic heights. An achingly beautiful intersection between old world and new, the mineral and herb driven Watson Ranch Chardonnay 2017 is grown on Napa’s only known swath of limestone. The glossy mouthfeel is perfectly intertwined with a gust of acidity, giving it a sensation of weightlessness.
