In 1883 two German brothers of the name Grimm, unrelated to the gruesome fairy tales, established the Grimm Vineyards and Wine Vaults and hence a winemaking tradition in the upper Napa Valley.
The vicissitudes of Prohibition left the winery and vines abandoned until 1976 when Jerry and Sigrid Seps purchased a 90-acre parcel. Jerry, a former professor with a Ph.D. in European History, at 81 years old is still head of vineyard management, winemaking, tractor diving, and as of 2017, firefighter. Continuing in the family tradition is his daughter Colleen, who is now assistant winemaker.
Located at the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley, nestled up on the eastern side of the Mayacamas range lies the Storybook property, surrounded completely by forest and nary a neighbor. The wines are fully estate sourced with a year-round team of 9 people. When replanting the estate in 1976, Jerry hired a migrant worker with whom he established a strong friendship. Upon realizing he needed full-time agricultural help, he sponsored Moises and his family to come to the US, and when expanding- ing from 4 acres to 40, Jerry did the same with Moises’ three brothers. Subsequent generations of the Ayala family have taken over as the original brothers retired, making this a double family-run winery.
A rosé of Zinfandel, the fresh, zippy Zin Gris 2017 (Everyday Wine) offers strawberries, sweet cherries, nectarines, and a savory finish. The lighthearted and extremely drinkable Mayacamas Range Zinfandel 2014 deftly exhibits the lifted fruit and aromatics of mountain zinfandel with black cherry, and purple flowers, all complemented by a fine-grained tannin. Power and pure, elongated fruit of the Antaeus 2014 is lightened by high-toned aromatics, garrigue, and tastefully balanced tannin.
