“Committed to the Slow philosophy, Steve and Jill Matthiasson grow most of their own food and prepare it for the enjoyment of family and friends at their beautiful yellow
farmhouse, surrounded by their estate vineyards”

PEOPLE

Steve and Jill came to the world of wine through their significant experience in organic farming — Jill worked for a family farming nonprofit for a decade; Steve, a widely-respected viticulturist, came to grape growing and then to winemaking by this path.

VINEYARDS

Matthiasson has 10 acres of estate vineyards, but Steve personally manages the growth of the grapes on almost all of the other non-estate acreage from which they harvest. That level of control is important to him; besides the assurance that the grapes are grown organically, it allows him to make such choices as less-manicured vines. With less direct sun, Steve maintains the high-tone aromatics such as floral and spice that are hallmarks of Matthiasson wines.

WINES

Matthiasson, known for its lower-alcohol, lively, and highly aromatic wines, has received accolades for being on the vanguard of a new style of California wine. The Matthiasson Napa Valley Ribolla Gialla 2015 benefits from three weeks of skin contact, lending it a beautiful golden hue in the glass. On the nose, it’s light with notes of fresh apple, white tea, chamomile, and dill. The herbal notes extend onto the palate and are joined by honeysuckle and crisp tangerine zest. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 has black pepper and baking spices on the nose, and is light-bodied with highly structured tannins and a lingering finish of blackcurrant and ginger.

SLOW WINE

Napa Valley Linda Vista Chardonnay 2017
