Turley Wine Cellars is a brainchild of Frog’s Leap co-founder Larry Turley, a former physician. Wanting to shift his focus to old vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, he divested from Frog’s Leap and started hunting for old vineyards for his new enterprise in St. Helena.
Turley now makes 34 wines from 25 of some of the most historic and notable dry-farmed vineyards scattered throughout 10 counties in California. Turley’s Hayne Vineyard, originally planted in St. Helena in 1904, withstood the scourge and neglect of Prohibition and today produces some of California’s most highly coveted wines. To behold the Ueberroth vineyard in the Willow Creek sub AVA of Paso Robles is to look back in time 130 years. Bushy Zinfandel vines dot the stark white limestone slopes, where vineyard manager Brennan Stover insists on hand-hoeing the deceivingly steep hillsides.
One of our editors called the Zampatti Vineyard Zinfandel 2014 “quite simply California in a glass, the ultimate expression of Zinfandel in the New World,” with robust blackberry aromas with a great vein of acid and tightly wound tannins. The Ueberroth Vineyard Zinfandel 2014, with its fleshy fruit, prodigious amount minerality, and zinging acidity, was another highlight. “Truly stunning.”
