PRESTON FARM AND WINERY
9282 W. Dry Creek Rd.
Healdsburg CA 95448
When Lou Preston first arrived to the Dry Creek area of Sonoma in 1973, he found himself surrounded by a plethora of Italian immigrants as neighbors. Though his formal education in wine took place at U.C. Davis, it was his community of fellow farmers who led him down the path of honest winemaking and stewardship of the land. The initial winery was dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel, but quickly expanded to include more grapes and other agricultural endeavors. Of the 120-acre property, only 60 are planted to vine, the rest are dedicated to heritage wheats for their sourdough program, fruit and vegetable gardens, orchards, and flocks of sheep, as well as a good portion of uncultivated land left to natural habitat.
Farmed organically since 2000, the property is overseen by biodynamic consultant Philippe Corderay. In 2015 it celebrated its Demeter certification. The farm boasts a few breathtaking heritage dry-farmed vineyards, most notably the Guadagni block planted in the late 1800s where gnarled old plants dot the hillside bench that slopes upward toward the encroaching forest. The vineyard is planted to mixed blacks
The Sauvignon Blanc 2016 is delicate and restrained with tropical fruits, acidity, and minerality, and a long finish. The Zinfandel 2014 offers classic notes of strawberry, blueberry, and plum. A touch of clove in the finish and a slender tannic structure show the potential tenderness and grace of an often clumsy variety.
