Palmina has led the way for producing high-quality, food-friendly wines entirely from Italian varieties. Since 1995, Palmina has brought together fresh and flavorful wines with a celebration of Italian food and culture.
Steve Clifton founded Palmina inspired by Italian culture, and a best friend Paula, for whom the winery is named, who taught him a love for food and wine. Clifton also leads the farming. Uniquely, the winery focuses not only on environmental sustainability but economic sustainability as well. Clifton has been among the first in California to employ year-round vineyard crew as a way to both maintain high quality farming and well-paid vineyard staff.
Palmina farms several vineyards in the center of Santa Ynez Valley relying on organic practices and minimal irrigation. In addition, he works with a couple carefully selected in other parts of Santa Barbara County in order to produce Nebbiolo from varying soil profiles and climate conditions.
Palmina relies on traditional methods for its flagship Nebbiolo, including extended aging in large casks with no new wood. The approach offers supple tannin, mouthwatering acidity, and just a bit of rusticity. While Palmina produces excellent Nebbiolo from several vineyards, the Nebbiolo Rocca 2009 (GREAT WINE) stands out with a complex range of flavors including mixed fruits with fresh, savory herbs, fine tannins, and a mouthwatering finish.
