Founder Milla Handley is an Anderson Valley original, having first come to this remote Mendocino County region in 1978, when it was still a bit of a viticultural backwater. Located at the northwestern end of the valley on the site of the Holmes Ranch, Handley’s is now a landmark winery along the now-well-traveled Highway 128. Randy Schock, cellar master at Handley since 2004, was elevated to co-winemaker in 2013.
Handley’s holdings, which have received California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) organic certification, include an estate vineyard of roughly 30 acres, planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, andGewürztraminer in sandy/loam soils. This is considered the deep end of the Anderson Valley AVA, which, at just 10 miles from the Pacific Coast, sees profound diurnal temperature shifts and is, on average, among the coolest growing zones in California. RSM Vineyard, a seven-acre site named for Milla Handley’s late husband, is a Pinot Noir vineyard that sits above the fog line in shallower soils, producing more intensely concentrated fruit. The estate also works with a wide assortment of contract growers to supplement its own production, reaching into most of the Mendocino County AVAs in the process.
The Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2014 (DAILY WINE) is an Anderson Valley benchmark, characterized by red-fruit aromas, silky tannins, and refreshing acidity. The RSM Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014 is a deeper, darker affair, with notes of black cherry, underbrush, and baking spices. On the white side, the Anderson Valley Gewürztraminer 2016 channels Alsace with its round, oily texture and exotic aromas of white peach, lychee, white flowers, and warm spices.
