Ross Cobb studied Agro Ecology and Sustainable Agriculture at University of California Santa Cruz with an emphasis on living soil, thus paving the way for a lifetime dedicated to maintaining soil health and integrity. Prior to 2016, Ross worked for a number of distinguished California wineries, a who’s who of high level Pinot Noir: Hirsch, Flowers, Bonny Doon, and William Selyem. Though he still consults for a few wineries in the area, his main focus is now the Cobb label. Cobb Wines has been growing grapes for 28 years and making wine for 17.
After extensive research, soil analysis, and scouting, Ross Cobb’s parents decided to purchase what is now the Coastlands property, just outside Occidental. At 1200 ft. a.s.l., the 20-acre hillside property of uplifted marine sedimentary soil sits above the fog line and is thus exposed to the California sun’s ripening power while still heavily subjected to the fog and mists of the coast, a mere three miles away. Ross has practiced organic or biodynamic agriculture his whole life.
The Coastlands Vineyard Sonoma Coast 2015 (GREAT WINE) shows notes of burnt orange zest, cherry, and graphite with a vibrancy on the palate enlivens this mineral, austere coastal expression of Pinot Noir. The Diane Cobb Coastlands Vineyard Sonoma Coast 2014 is made using 18 different varieties of ungrafted Pinot Noir. It delivers dark berries, black cherry, raspberry, and cocoa with smoky notes of leather.
