Husband-and-wife team Gideon Beinstock and Saron Rice are the owners of Clos Saron. They live among their vineyards in the northern reaches of the Sierra Foothills.
The heart and soul of Clos Saron is its three-acre “Home Vineyard,” which, though originally planted to Cabernet, was grafted to Pinot Noir back in the late-1990s, when Gideon and Saron took over the property. Located in the town of Oregon House, in California’s Yuba County, the Home Vineyard faces northeast and sits at an elevation of 1,500 feet on a mix of clay/loam topsoil over decomposed granite. The vines are own-rooted (this area has never seen phylloxera), and farmed organically, and a more-recently planted, adjacent vineyard block—also three acres, and containing a mix of different grape varieties—is not yet in production. Supplementing these estate vineyards is a leased site of two acres, planted to Syrah, which Gideon and Saron also farm. As their own vineyard holdings have grown, they’ve supplemented their production with purchased fruit.
Beinstock has grown a devoted cult following for his tiny-production bottlings, which are headlined by the Home Vineyard Pinot Noir and the Stone Soup Syrah, both which are true cool-climate expressions of their varieties—perfumed, soil-expressive, and slightly wild and untamed. The Tickled Pink 2014 (SLOW WINE) was impressive for its brilliant freshness and transparency of fruit on the palate, ranging from ripe stone to red fruit.
