Bradley Brown enjoyed a rare American upbringing that welcomed wine to the table rather than shunned it. He expanded on this interest as many do, by drinking and traveling, but it wasn’t until had been working in Silicon Valley for some years that he took the plunge. Or ascent, as it were: the estate he purchased in 1998 lies at an elevation of 1,400 feet a.s.l.
The estate and winery are nestled high up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, surrounded by fog. The first planting was Syrah despite the area’s inclination toward Pinot Noir. Now three of the blocks on the property host Syrah, as well as other Rhône varieties. Brown started the Pinot Noir program in 2006 and now sources from four different mountain vineyards, which constitute about half of his production. He also has a groundbreaking new Grenache project in the Gabilan Mountains, which, in his view, has the potential to be one of the great terroirs of California.
Made from 35-year-old dry-farmed vines (the oldest in the Santa Cruz Mountains), the Woodruff Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 has an immensely layered and complex palate. Deep, dark undertones and a distinguished savoriness are contrasted with a tart red cherry and dried flower finish. The Old Corral Syrah Santa Cruz Mountains 2012 offers juicy black fruits and a vein of smoke adorned by purple flowers like violet and lavender. The fine tannins and well-balanced acidity give the wine a polished mouthfeel.
